SACRAMENTO, CA - Thousands of job seekers were at the HIREevent hosted by Job Journal Wednesday at the Holiday Inn in north Sacramento.

"We collected more than a thousand registration cards during the first hour alone," Event Coordinator Kathy Caricato said.

Companies were looking to hire for 770 jobs ranging in a variety of positions including entry-level to management levels.

More than a dozen companies participated in the job fair. Volt Workforce Solutions, a temporary job placement agency had the the largest number of jobs available at 500.

Caricato said the fact that companies have so many positions open is a good sign.

"During the peak of the recession, companies were holding back on hiring because they were afraid," Caricato said. "Now that they have so many jobs and are ready to hire means the job market is looking up."

In addition to employers, the HIREevent also had experts on hand to critique resumes.

Linda Hamilton of Hamilton Resume Service said your resume has to stand-out over someone who has the same skills.

Hamilton offered these tips:

-Write an elevator pitch, this will take the place of a job objective
-Be very specific in your achievements
-Keep your resume clear and concise.

According to the state's Employment Development Department, in July of 2009, California's unemployment rate hit 11.8 percent. Since then, we have seen 17 straight months of an unemployment rate higher than 12 percent.

The Job Journal will host a virtual job fair starting Thursday.
