“Higley school district getting into online-class business” |
| Higley school district getting into online-class business Posted: 30 Jul 2010 06:34 AM PDT by Hayley Ringle - Jul. 30, 2010 06:11 AM The Higley Unified School District is partnering with an online education company to begin offering online classes not only to Higley students, but students throughout the state. Higley would not incur any costs for the classes offered by Kaplan Virtual Education, but the district would receive about 10 percent of the class prices, which range from $345 to $170 a class. Classes offered would include core middle and high school classes, advanced classes such as AP and honors, credit recovery, dropout recovery, homebound and alternative and a summer school program. "We're trying to provide multiple platforms for students, some free, some at a cost," said Superintendent Denise Birdwell. The Higley governing board discussed the partnership Thursday, and a formal partnership agreement is expected to be considered at the next board meeting. The classes are expected to begin in the upcoming 2010-11 school year. All grades would be fully transferrable for Higley students. Birdwell said Kaplan approached her about a partnership a year ago. "Kaplan is for the serious student," Birdwell said. "The courses are tuned to the university. Higley students could use the (online) classes to get ahead." Higley teachers could also be trained to teach the online Kaplan classes for extra money. The district also announced a partnership with Rio Salado Community College to provide dual enrollment and college classes at Higley High School. The classes would also begin in August. Also at Thursday's meeting, the school board approved a job description for a high school parking lot attendant. Higley High School plans to use student parking fees to hire an attendant to keep an eye on its parking lot to maintain a safe environment and track student parking permits. "Misbehaviors happen in parking lots and bathrooms," Birdwell said. "A parking lot attendant is less expensive than a security guard." The position will pay about the same as a crossing guard, she added. The increased security in the parking lot will complement the new security cameras installed around the campus. Sixteen cameras were installed at Higley High School. Williams Field High School installed 37 cameras installed to help prevent a recurrence of the kind of end-of-school incidents that occurred last school year. The most serious incident, which occurred a few days before school ended in May, cost the district over $150,000 in damage after two students allegedly set off fire sprinklers and flooding several classrooms. Those students now face felony charges. Williams Field High School is expected to hire a parking lot attendant in the future after collecting a couple more years' worth of student parking fees, said Assistant Superintendent Tony Malaj.
