“Job ads edge higher” |
| Posted: 04 Jul 2010 07:13 PM PDT Updated Job advertisements increased 2.7 per cent last month in a sign the labour market is still edging forward. The ANZ monthly job advertisements series showed a 3 per cent rise in internet job ads, and a 1.6 per cent fall in newspaper employment advertisements. The increase backed on a 2.7 per cent rise in job ads in May, and leaves advertisements 32.2 per cent higher than a year ago. Overall, there was an average of almost 170,000 jobs advertised per week in June, seasonally adjusted. The number of jobs advertised is up 34.6 per cent on the trough in July last year, but still down 39 per cent on the peak reached in April 2008. ANZ's chief economist Warren Hogan says the signs are positive for more employment growth, but the second consecutive fall in newspaper job ads is a slight worry. "The recent strength in job advertisement numbers is not broadly-based. Similar to May, in June the rise in job advertisements was driven entirely by a 3 per cent rise in internet advertising. In contrast, newspaper job advertisements fell 1.6 per cent," he noted in the report. "Given that newspaper advertising is more expensive than internet advertising, we have observed that at turning points, newspaper advertising tends to move before the internet. "Hence, while the overall outlook still appears bright, the fall in newspaper job advertising in May and June does suggest that some businesses are adopting a more cautious stance. This is not unexpected given increasing concerns over the global backdrop."
