“Thousands Attend Warner Robins Job Fair” |
| Thousands Attend Warner Robins Job Fair Posted: 22 Jul 2010 02:48 PM PDT In all, 2900 people stopped by the job fair hosted by the Georgia Department of Labor's Houston County Career Center and the Middle Geogia Employer Committee. Organizers say it was the largest showing in recent memory and proof that the local economy is slowly turning around. The sheer number of people stopped traffic on Highway 247 as job seekers made their way into the Museum of Aviation where more than 80 prospective employers looked over resumes and interviewed candidates. Retired truck driver, Charles McWhorter, was impressed with the turn out. "I mean, I'm parked a mile down the road," he said. "It's a good sign." First time job seekers like Elizabeth Rosner stood in lines for hours, hoping to finally join the workforce. "When I entered school, they said there was a need for art teachers and when I graduated, they were letting them go," she said. Everyone from college graduates to people without GED's showed up, some of them desperate for a paycheck. "Things will only get worse I think, if I do not secure a position soon," said Nathaniel Gallagher. In middle Georgia the unemployment rate is at 10.2 percent, barely above the state's average. It's one reason Maureen Wilson with the Georgia Department of Labor says job fairs like this one are so important. "Employers can't get a feel for a person from something online," she said. "This brings the two sides face-to-face and gives both sides a chance to ask questions." She offers three tips to people looking for work: (1) Stay motivated; (2) be specific about the kind of job you're looking for; (3) proofread your resume.
