| Roseville job seeker warns of employment 'phishing' scam Posted: 17 Aug 2010 07:02 PM PDT ROSEVILLE, CA - A Roseville woman who thought she was in line for a $75,000 job as an administrative assistant says she nearly fell victim to an online job posting scam that sought her credit card number. Bryn Brown, 34, responded to the ad on craigslist that was placed late last week. On Tuesday, someone claiming to represent Spherion, a legitimate job placement agency, informed Brown that she was a finalist for the position. The email said a credit check was necessary before a face-to-face interview could be scheduled, and gave her a link to a credit monitoring service that requires a credit card. "Please complete this first step ASAP as we only have 48 hours to set up interviews," the email explained. Brown had heard an increasing number of employers require credit checks as a condition of employment. "So it really didn't strike me as odd," she said. But before she entered her credit card information, Brown visited the Spherion website to learn more about the company. That's where she saw the warning about job post phishing scams. "Spherion has become aware of a recent phishing ploy that preys (on) job candidates, attempting to lure them to submit credit information," the warning reads. "Please know that his is not a message from Spherion." Lesly Cardec, a spokeswoman for Florida-based Spherion, said the warning was posted on the company's website within the past month following numerous reports of fraudulent emails similar to the one received by Brown. Many of the reports came from the Sacramento area, Cardec said. "We never ask for credit information online," Cardec explained. "The credit check would come after an initial meeting or test," she said. Cardec urged anyone who has been victimized by the phishing scheme to contact the company at a special email address. The email that Brown received differs from a typical phishing scheme in that the link does not appear to be seeking personal information. The link points to a credit monitoring service that would have charged Brown's credit card a $29.95 monthly membership fee. Brown contacted News10 because she came so close to being tricked and wanted to warn other job seekers. "It's the perfect scam. They're looking for people who need jobs and everybody in California needs jobs," she said. by George Warren, GWarren@news10.net News10/KXTVThis entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php |
