Hundreds lined up even before the doors opened early in the morning. Navy reservist Valerie Horsky waited for nearly three hours for a shot at a border patrol job. "Ive always been interested and I just became a U.S citizen so I said I want to give something back to the country and protect the borders," Horsky said. The local fair was part of a nationwide search, and was held at the Border Patrol offices east of the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Recruiters took applications and answered questions, and prospective border patrol agents took part in an orientation about the agency. "We didn't expect this much of a turnout I mean we though for sure it would be a good turnout," said Elee Erice, public affairs specialist for Border Patrol. "But we didn't expect this much and it's been going on since 5:30 this morning." The jobs pay well, with starting salary in some cases more than $63 thousand, but just to be considered applicants have to go through a stringent pre-employment process. Applicants must be a US Citizen (for at least 3 years), be 40 years-old or under, and have a valid drivers license. Then, they must pass: A thorough background investigation, A written examination, Medical and drug screenings, Two pre-employment physical fitness tests, An oral hiring board, conducted by three uniformed Border Patrol agents. There are different opportunities available, and not all are in South Florida. The Dania Beach fair is one of 4 planned for Florida; Orlando will have one September 28th at the University of Central Florida, while Florida A&M will host one September 29th. The final fair will be held September 30th at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Those interested, but who are unable to make it to Dania Beach, can apply online. (© MMX, CBS Broadcasting Inc.
