| Macy's holds job fair for seasonal workers Posted: 13 Nov 2010 04:54 PM PST PORTLAND, Tenn. – Macy's held a job fair in Portland on Saturday to hire employees for the upcoming holiday season. The department store's distribution center held the job fair to finish filling seasonal positions. The center handles online orders for Macy's and Bloomingdale's. Craig Burysek attended the job fair on Saturday. The Franklin, Kentucky resident crossed the state line in the hopes of getting a job since he lost his job six weeks ago. "It's stressful on everyone with the way the economy is, not knowing from one day to the next if you are going to have money to pay the bills," Burysek told News 2. Burysek's father, Jerry, is also unemployed and attended the job fair with his son. "It's getting close to the holidays," Jerry Burysek said, adding, "You need money for Christmas and to take care of your family." Macy's is planning to hire 65,000 seasonal workers nationwide for the holiday shopping season. Other retailers also plan to hire large numbers of people nationwide. Toys "R" Us plans to hire 45,000 employees, J.C. Penny will hire 30,000 and Best Buy plans to hire 29,000 workers. Last month retailers added 153,000 jobs, which is triple the number of jobs added in October 2009. That could be good news to millions of Americans who are unemployed. Currently there are 2.5 million unemployed Americans that are facing the loss of federal long-term unemployment benefits November 30. Craig Burysek said the economic news is tough to hear as he struggles to find a job. "It's been tough. Jobs are few and far between," Craig Burysek said. By the end of the Macy's job fair, News 2 learned that at least 60% of the applicants who attended Saturday's event received job offers. The distribution center still has seasonal positions to fill.
