On-line job postings in San Diego County remained relatively strong in January, driven by new openings for repair, production and sales workers, according to a monthly index of job postings maintained by Monster.com.

Despite a seasonally related dip in want-ads, online job postings in January were 8 percent ahead of January 2010. It was the 11th month in a row that the county has had year-to-year growth in job openings.

Between December and January, local job postings dipped 3 percent, compared to a 7 percent dip nationwide. Such dips commonly follow the end-of-the-year surge in hiring for the holiday shopping season.

On a year-to-year basis, the industries that saw the highest percentage growth in hiring were:

  • Installation, upkeep and repair, up 75%
  • Production, up 33%
  • Sales and related, up 18%
  • Arts, design, entertainment, sports and media, up 18%

The slowest growth was for:

  • Military specific, down 43%
  • Protective service, down 23%
  • Building and grounds cleaning and maintenance, down 19%
  • Transportation and material moving, down 16%
  • Architecture and engineering, down 6%

Despite the surge, San Diego has one of the slowest job growth rates among the nation's top 28 markets, Monster.com said. For a link to the report on San Diego County, click HERE.
