Columbus has major job fair Wednesday, Thursday

It's historically one of the largest job fairs of the year in Columbus, and it's coming at an opportune time.

With the Columbus metro area unemployment rate now at 9.5 percent, the Georgia Department of Labor is co-sponsoring a job fair Wednesday and Thursday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 665, 1824 Victory Drive.

The 840 member VFW — the largest chapter in Georgia — is co-sponsor of the event, which has been held more than 15 years and is geared toward military veterans and those leaving the service, but is also open to the general public.

"It has to do with the fact that as a VFW we're here to help serve the veterans and help the community itself out," said Jack Hodges, Post 665 commander. "It's fantastic watching people come in, knowing some of them really need these jobs, especially in a down economy right now."

About 70 employers and other organizations are expected at the fair, which takes place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. both days.

There will be mix of companies on hand, ranging from refrigeration equipment manufacturer Kysor/Warren and retailers Best Buy and Sears Holdings to call center operation Afni and defense contractors CAIC and Camber Corp.

Police departments from Atlanta and LaGrange, Ga., as well as Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services, have committed to attend.

The job fair comes with the Columbus metro area unemployment rate at 9.5 percent in July. Jobless data for August are due out Thursday, but in July there were about 12,000 unemployed workers in the metro area. The city's unemployment rate also is better than Georgia's overall 10 percent last month and on par with the current 9.6 percent U.S. rate.

In a sign of the strain workers nationwide feel from the economic downturn, results released recently of a survey performed for online job site CareerBuilder found that 77 percent of employees are living paycheck to paycheck; compared to 61 percent in 2009. Twenty-two percent said they missed payments on bills within the past 12 months. The Harris Interactive survey included more than 4,400 U.S. workers.

"The last 18 months have required some workers to tighten their day-to-day spending and make some adjustments to their financial futures," Rosemary Haefner, CareerBuilder vice president of human resources, said in a statement.

Workers in the survey said they have managed their dollars in various ways, including reducing leisure activities (54 percent), using coupons and discount shopping (48 percent), cutting back on driving to save gas (37 percent), eliminating cable television and other subscriptions (12 percent) and taking public transportation (5 percent).
